Nominating for the ugliest building award 2011

From our reporter Carl-Gustav Badente

Fine to give women a head start and preferential treatment these days, but I wonder if they asked a woman's advice in the redesign of the interior walls around the ITC garden?
As Enschede received the dubious honour of being awarded the "ugliest building award" in 2010, several inhabitants of the Alberts & van Huut creation on the Hengelosestraat were wondering if there was a serious attempt being made to keep the award also in 2011.

Ugliest building of 2010
The "gasunie" building in Groningen, the big brother of the ITC building, received the  award for being the most beautiful building a few years back and if we are to believe Den Oudsten, the ITC building is something Enschede is actually proud of. Then why has its internal garden been allowed to be decorated in the most rediculous way with memorabilia of a distant past? The people I interviewed were all in agreement that "... preservation of the historical artefacts is a good thing, but why on earth in this way ..."
The building has a few distinct characteristics involving asymmetry and brick lines that shape the exterior. Whoever came up with the idea to symmetrically affix these woodcarvings and then add to the abomination by placing them accross the prominent brick lines? Meanwhile people have warned the Mayor not to be too enthousiastic anymore in his speeches about this so called "landmark" of Enschede. The UT CvB, who are still trying to decide on a proper landmark for the UT, have taken the ITC building now of their list of possibles. Alberts & van Huut responded with utter disbelief, they are coming next week to check for themselves. I hope the Dean and his wife can explain it to them.
